TOWN N COUNTRY -  Hillsborough County deputies responded to an accidental shooting early Tuesday morning.

The call came in the 6500 block of Alta Monte Drive. A grandmother was sleeping in the home with her two grandsons while the father was at work.

The grandmother had placed a chair against the bedroom door handle for protection. Around 1AM she woke up to the sound of the chair sliding against the door. Assuming it was an intruder, she armed herself with a .22 caliber revolver.

She fired one shot in the dark towards the closed door and heard screams coming from her 7-year-old grandson. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Deputies say the grandson is in critical but stable condition. It’s unknown whether any charges will be filed.
